MASTERSKAYA

Marilena Kalaitzantonaki is a set and costume designer and visual artist based in Athens. She studied painting, set design and costume design at the Imperial Academy of Arts (Repin) in Saint Petersburg, where she completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies. During her studies, she worked at major theatres in Saint Petersburg, including BDT, the Mariinsky Theatre and the Alexandrinsky Theatre.

Her artistic practice moves between set design, costume, painting and art direction, spanning theatre, dance and cinema. She has collaborated, among others, with Onassis Stegi, the National Theatre of Greece, the Greek National Opera and the Athens Concert Hall, and was a member of Dimitris Papaioannou’s set design team for Transverse Orientation and INK. In cinema, she worked as Art Director on Sofia Exarchou’s film ANIMAL.

Her recent theatre collaborations include Antigone Project, HAMLET machine, Oedipus Rex, The Earth Gods, The Life, Old Age and Death of a Working-Class Woman, and Faethon. Alongside her work for the stage, she has presented solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, and her artworks are held in permanent collections.

She is the founder of MASTERSKAYA, through which she develops her artistic practice while organizing and realizing theatrical and interdisciplinary productions and collaborations.
